Working a business can give you a sense that you are at war - it's often referred to as an "arms race," where the business that builds the most links for cheapest, overtakes the market. I'm reminded of the phrase "total war" where success depends upon the ability and efficiency of either side in mobilizing all of its resources to a particular goal. If we are unable to quickly and efficiently mobilize our business resources to tasks that generate us money (such as SEO), our competitors will be able to outspend and outmaneuver us.
In consultancy, we must be even more disciplined in building our businesses by working with companies over months and years. To do this means you have to give them better returns and better margins than they could have earned themselves, and you must enable your clients to outmaneuver their competition by becoming an asset rather than an ongoing cost. The great thing about this militaristic mindset is that it forces you to develop a systematic approach to everything you do. This systematic approach should enable everyone to do more with less.
