You probably have heard of sales funnels but you might not understand entirely how they work. Just like a funnel for filling a bottle, the funnel starts off very wide and narrows to a spout. This helps manage the water and the flow to get the results you want.

In a similar way, sales funnels are about controlling the flow of clients and guiding them to the end result which is usually purchasing a product or service. You start the funnel big to catch as much of your target market as possible. Then through a series of actions the funnel narrows. Often they follow a similar routine:

  • Initial contact
  • Application of Initial Fit Criteria
  • Sales lead
  • Need identification
  • Qualified prospect
  • Proposal
  • Negotiation
  • Closing
  • Deal Transaction


This funnel helps reduce the number of "lookers" and people who will take action "later" and brings in the people who will take the critical step of purchasing. A funnel helps both you as a business owner and the potential clients, by giving you both time to work together.
