Hello Friend,
While you may think that social media is a fairly recent form of marketing, truth is social marketing has been around a long time. For a simple case study, think about Animal Crackers.
You have known about them since you were little. If you didn't have them, you saw other children with them. Children would excitedly tell each other about the animal shaped crackers. Even if you didn't see the crackers or know what they were, seeing someone with the fun circus type box would be enough to cause excitement.
Their biggest advertisement has always been word of mouth and popular appeal. This is the same format that enabled Star Wars to hyperdrive into movie history. This was social marketing before the Internet derived and was mainly based on word of mouth and general conversation.
Conversations about movies, good food and similar things are all about selling... but without sales pitches, advertising, or other conventional methods. It is about selling friends and family on the same things you like. This is what so many businesses are missing. They are missing the understanding that when you try to blatantly sell on social media, you are actually driving away your potential clients.
